The 2nd 50 mile Race For The Rainforest took place on Saturday, Sept 2nd, 2000 in New Orleans, LA. Ironically, the race founded to raise awareness of the disastrous
consequences of the destruction of the rainforests was likely victimized by global warming, a direct consequence of rainforest destruction.
Only Louis Douglas, Larry Schleuter, and Steve Morrow met at 5:00 a.m. to contest the race on a day that would become, at 101 degrees, the hottest September day in New
Orleans' recorded history.
Louis set a personal distance record with an inspired 18 mile run. Larry, last year's Masters winner, gave his all for 38 miles before the threat of serious injury,
certainly from the heat and possibly from his wife, forced him to the sidelines. Steve, last year's overall winner, celebrating his 50th birthday in somewhat dubious fashion, covered 44
miles before surrendering to the deadly heat.
The 3rd Race for the Rainforest was set for Earth Day, April 22nd, 2001. It is safe to say that the race will never again be run in the summer
as long as lumber, cattle, mining and oil interests are allowed to promote global warming by their ruthless and greedy destruction of earth's most precious ecosystem.
Many thanks to This Company for their rainforest herbal endurance and recovery formulas that gave me the strength to train for and survive this race, and for all they do to help preserve our rapidly disappearing rainforests.
